The head of the prosecution team in the Iraqi Judicial court, Mr Jafar Almousawi, in the Saddam trial, announced that the court is legitimate as it was formed following the national election and also by an overall decision from the Iraqi parliament - which is jurisdiction not political identity.
Mr Almousawi said in a private interview with PUKmedia: “There are no external pressures on the court which deals according to the law – that it is a fair trial. He added that he is hurt from the defendant’s behaviour in the ALdejael case which is a straight forward case but which reached 40 hearings. We demand to free one defendant for insufficient evidence and to be lenient with the other three, on health grounds and demanded execution, as punishment for Saddam Hussein.”
Mr Almousawi emphasised that from the start to the last hearing in the court, we haven’t seen any real defence efforts as the defendants and their lawyers focused on minor issues, such as the legality of the court. If the concluding verdict is execution, then Saddam will be hanged as punishment – because the court is a Civil court not military. If Article 2.27 of the Iraqi Law is applied then the execution will take place after 30 days from the verdict. There is no law that will exempt any age from this execution.
